"We don’t want access to abortion to be available on P.E.I. and we’ll just be there to make sure we get our point across,” Ryan said in an interview.
“Why mothers would want to have their children aborted – my goodness, I don’t know."
My GOODNESS, indeed. Golly, why would anyone do that? Ugh, the prissy, entitled ignorance of that statement is making my skin crawl.
So, background, anyone? PEI is the only province in Canada in which a woman cannot get an abortion (they’ve been fully legal throughout the country since 1988). If she manages to get a referral from two doctors, she can go to Nova Scotia where the procedure is paid for by PEI health care. If she can’t get the referrals in time, it’s off to a private clinic in New Brunswick, where the abortion can cost as much as $900. A new group called the PEI Reproductive Rights Organization is fighting to give island women the same opportunities that other Canadians are guaranteed. They’re having a rally tomorrow, and I want to wish them all possible success, most especially to my old pal Sam Wight, who’s stepped up to the plate as a PRRO spokesperson and shown remarkable sangfroid in getting the message across!
